Fertilization

Lawn aeration loosens compacted soil, increasing its ability to transfer air, water, and nutrients to the root system. Immediately after this process, fertilization and water should be applied to use the thin layer of thatch, plant stems, and dead roots, to prevent compaction and hold moisture. The thatch must only be around a half inch, because thicker thatch can be harmful.

Organic Lawn Solutions

If your lawn is not up to your lofty standards, the cause could be depleted soil devoid of nutrients and organic matter. The best way to address this is by aerating, top dressing, overseeding, optimally irrigating and applying fertilizer upon evaluating the soil for its physical, chemical and biological properties.

Seeding

When you see bare patches in the early fall, around six to eight weeks before the first frost, rake the soil, deposit seeds, and lightly rake again. Top dress with a thin layer of topsoil, water, and keep the area moist as the seeds sprout and thicken.

Pests

In early September, pull back the sod to look for greenish-brown larvae. Although it may not show visible damage yet, once mid-October hits, you will may see brown patches if pests are present. Spray beneficial nematodes (microscopic parasites) on the lawn to control them.

Fertilizers

The concept of organics has to do with fertilizing the soil and increasing soil microbial activity. Nutrients enter the soil as organic matter, which is decomposed by soil microorganisms. By feeding the soil, the soil microbial grows and plants are enhanced and kept healthy.

Healthy Soil

Healthy soil is home to billions of microorganisms that feed on organic matter in the soil. Organic matter could be leaves, grass clippings, manure, buried wood, shed grass roots, or almost any biodegradable material that enters the soil to release nutrients.

Sandy Soils

Coarse-textured soils are those high in sand, so adding organic matter to sandy soil will help with water retention and provide additional nutrients. For extremely sandy soil, a mix of soil to organic matter as high as 50/50 may be needed.
